Using Adobe Photoshop to Analysis Vuggy Porosity Quantitatively Based on Electrical Borehole Images


Carbonate reservoir formations are generally characterized by massive occurrence of vuggy pore types that their identification and estimation present great challenges for quantitative formation evaluation. It is well understood that electrical borehole images provide effective means for direct detection of vug-pore component since the tool samples at high vertical resolution and with an almost possibility of full borehole coverage. We herein interpreted the vuggy reservoir types from processing of micro-resistivity images using Adobe Photoshop software, which presents significant advantages for identification and quantitative analysis of vug-reservoirs, and thus estimation of vuggy porosity, through pixel selection and image segmentation techniques. Thus, image processing through integration of Adobe Photoshop's "selection tool" and artificial eyes’s identification has relatively enabled accurate delineation of vuggy zones along the logged interval of Xiaoerbulake formation and across the target regions. Moreover, based on combination of image fast segmentation and the “histogram” pixel recognition function of Adobe Photoshop, highly accurate porosity estimates were readily calculated for each depth interval window. Finally, after illustrations using data obtained from four wells in the Bachu-Tazhong area of Tarim Basin, Xinjiang province, the results obtained were satisfactory as support the good match between the identified vuggy layers and the oil and gas producing intervals, and that may prove the practical importance of interpreting vuggy porosity from electrical borehole images using Adobe Photoshop technique. We believed the undertaken approach for vuggy porosity estimation may find worldwide application.
