Four basic color groups that are correlated to lithologic properties are: (1) dark gray to brown = shale or claystone, (2) white = tightly cemented sandstone, (3) yellow = porous and permeable sandstone, and (4) orange = porous, clay-rich sandstone. Mixed and transition zones are also evident.
