AAPG Membership and the Dynamic of the E&P Industry

AAPG is the largest association of energy related geoscientists in the world and the make up of its membership is a barometer of the professional geoscience workforce for the energy industry. Many dramatic changes are occurring in the demographics of the geoscience community. An understanding of these changes and the underlying causes is critical to examining the future of E&P organizations.

This paper reports on the age, gender, employment type, and global location characteristics of AAPG members and the trends that are apparent looking into the future. It is commonly reported that the geoscience workforce is aging, but that is only one of the themes apparent in the data. Professional associations, employers, educational institutions and government agencies need to be aware of the dramatic changes occurring in this important professional group.
