Quantifying the Impact of a Complex Overburden in Kaieteur Basin: An Integrated Modeling Study from Seismic Survey Design to Quantitative Interpretation

Abstract

The geological complexity of offshore Guyana Basin represents a compelling challenge during hydrocarbon exploration activities due to intricate seismic image. The representation of the overburden is affected by shallow water, drastic stratigraphic changes across the section, existence of highly dipping events, and faults. The identification and dissociation of lean reservoir levels from background seismic signal roar is key to define a prospect with confidence. The applied methodology allows an accurate definition and isolation of seismic noise from effective signal, by integrating seismic elastic modelling, depth imaging, and quantitative interpretation disciplines. A systematic geological modelling permits to evaluate the impact of overburden on target image, resolution, accuracy of velocity estimation during standard and enhanced processing flows, as well as possible AVO effect. The initial phase of our study was done with 2D seismic lines and proves the importance of guided signal processing in quantitative interpretation analysis. This methodology is fundamental in selecting the appropriate reservoir characterization techniques, and to understand data limitations.
