Deepwater Guyana Basin and the Demerara Rise: Magma‐rich Rifting and a Tectonostratigraphic Framework Hosting Deepwater Exploration Targets
Abstract
The Jurassic opening of the southern Central Atlantic Ocean was accompanied by voluminous magmatism at the rifted margins of Suriname/Guinea Bissau and Southern Florida. Subsequent to this opening, an Aptian-age dextral rifting phase initiated in the Equatorial Atlantic. A complex tectonostratigraphic framework records the separate sequences of rifting and a transpressive phase. This framework hosts the past and untested exploration targets in the Guyana Basin.
