Identifying Carbon Loss in Rondonia, Brazil by Estimating Above Ground Biomass

Abstract

In order to estimate the carbon loss in the northeastern part of Rondonia Amazon areas, above ground biomass (AGB) estimation is used. For detecting AGB, Landsat TM and ETM+ datas are selected for a remote sensing approach. Landsat TM and ETM+ images gathered from different lengths of time provided information on land covers after they had passed through the geometric correction, image enhancement and classification processes. Creating a landcover map from both of the images has shown the changes in the land cover types in 12 year time period. The primary forest areas have decreased by a percentage of 13.236 between the years 1989 and 2001. The Carbon potential is changed from 2,760,668,558 kg C to 2,003,884,106 kg C.
