The Palaeozoic successions of Arabia became a focus for hydrocarbon exploration in the early 1970’s when very large gas reserves were discovered in the Permian Khuff carbonates in the Gulf and Zagros areas, and oil was found in Permo-Carboniferous clastic reservoirs in Oman. Subsequently, the number of discoveries in these stratigraphic intervals increased and more hydrocarbons (mainly gas) were discovered in older Palaeozoic sequences. In addition, Neoproterozoic limestones and in places even basement proved to be hydrocarbon bearing.
