Lateral Transition between Mixed Carbonate-Clastic and Epeiric Carbonate Platform Systems on the Mesozoic Arabian Epeiric Shelf

Abstract

During Mesozoic times Arabia was covered by an extensive epeiric shelf with carbonate platform development at the ocean ward margin, while clastics predominated along the exposed Arabian Shield in the southwest. These two domains were separated by a relative deep water belt with mixed carbonate siliciclastic deposition. Lateral shifts of these facies belts driven by changes in relative sea level and climate has built the Mesozoic stratigraphic framework.
