Building on previous field work and analysis carried out in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, a detailed integrated study towards understanding the structural and sedimentological evolution of Eastern Kurdistan has been undertaken through a major new field analysis and sampling programme. Fracture data have been collected, using the scan line methodology, on several anticlines in the Zagros Mountain Foothills Fold and Thrust Zone and High Altitude Folded Zone and to cover most of the stratigraphic units exposed in the area, ranging from the Lower Cretaceous to the Miocene. The fracture data have been integrated with regional structural models derived from remote sensing data (ASTER™ DEM and SPOT™) and used to establish an overall fracture model. The model addresses the influence of changes in tectonic processes throughout time and their distribution and effects within potential reservoir units. Petrographic analysis focused on the reservoir quality of the major Cretaceous and Paleogene reservoir units in terms of matrix mineralogy and texture and the mineralogy of sampled veins from the study area.
