Techniques for Increasing Geologic Mapping Productivity

Today’s geologic mapping efforts may be classified into two primary categories; hand mapping and computer mapping. Each category has its distinct advantages and disadvantages. Hand mapping is accurate and detailed, but is often slow, especially when dealing with large areas. Computer mapping is fast, but the results are dependent upon the quality of the data and the detail of the data used. Also, geologic interpretations and means to confirm data accuracy are generally not available from commercial data suppliers.

Learning to manipulate databases and using third party data editing and logic programs may be the key for enabling many operators to combine the advantages of the accuracy of hand mapping techniques with the advantages of the speed of computer mapping. Database programs such as Excel or Open Office offer formula functionality that when properly used provide the geologist with tools to screen and manipulate data for mapping. These formulas and third party programs also offer logic functionality that may be employed with computer mapping that make geologic interpretations clearer.

The bottom line is to use modern database manipulation techniques to cut the time and expense of finding oil and gas. Simple issues such as the reduction of keystroke entries in databases by the use of formulas, the ability to edit, manipulate and quality check commercial or company data and the ability to incorporate logic functionality into database management are all important and necessary steps for reducing costs in today’s economic climate.
