A Reassessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources of Basin in South America

The
U.S. Geological Survey is in the process of updating the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources in significant oil and gas basins of South America that was released in 2000. Basins being re-assessed include the Campos, Santos, Espirito Santo (Brazil), Neuquen, San Jorge, Malvinas, and Magallanes (Argentina), Santa Cruz-Tarija (Bolivia), Putumayo-Oriente (Peru and Ecuador), Llanos, Upper, Middle, and Lower Magdelena (Colombia), Maracaibo, East Venezuela (Venezuela), offshore Trinidad, Tobago Trough, Falklands, Barbados offshore, and Guyana-Suriname Basin. Using the onshore Argentina and Venezuela basins as examples of re-assessment results, the undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources in these basins generally decreased from the estimates made in 2000 largely due to the intensive exploration and development of smaller onshore oil and gas fields in the past decade. Basins of the offshore Atlantic margin continue to hold significant potential for undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources. A geologic screening of onshore basins for unconventional resources (tight gas sands, gas shales, coalbed gas) suggests that several of these basins might have significant potential for these types of resources, given the geologic and production analogs from basins in the U.S.
