ABSTRACT

Black Creek is a Wilcox oil field located in Grant Parish Louisiana.  The field was discovered in December 1994 by the Caruthers IPC #1 well in Section 1, T7N, R3W.  First production from that well began in January 1995 with a flowing rate of approximately 130 barrels of oil per day.  Continued developmental drilling eventually resulted in 21 producing wells, which produced in excess of 1700 barrels per day at their peak.  Currently, the field produces approximately 400 barrels per day from 17 wells.  Cumulative production through December 2008 is 2,675,223 barrels.  The field produces from multiple pay zones which are controlled by structural closure or stratigraphic discontinuities of the various zones.

The field was discovered through a combination of subsurface geology and 2D seismic data.  Geologically, the field is best described as a differential compaction feature, occurring at the intersection of a lower Wilcox “channel,” and a low relief regional structural nose.  The combination of these two features has created a structural platform with unusually strong positive relief in area that is typically dominated by monoclinal regional dip with very few structural anomalies.  Because the area is relatively devoid of what could be called typical structures, the compactional features are typically found to contain prolific amounts of hydrocarbons that have migrated to them from a wide area that has little or no interruption in regional dip to limit the migration paths.

Several other fields in the outlying areas are also controlled by differential compaction features, indicating that more fields like Black Creek could be found in the future.  Because subsurface control is relatively sparse in the area, identifying and mapping these “channels” can be a difficult task, but the available seismic data in the area can be used to supplement the limited subsurface information.
