Aker Exploration has adopted an initial screening strategy using Sea Bed Logging, where possible within the limits of the geological model, to identify hydrocarbon prospective areas and define an exploration strategy of ranking and data acquisition in both very mature and frontier basins.

The Norwegian areas of the North Sea and Norwegian Sea are maturing while some basin areas e.g those in the Barents Sea and Vøring (Norwegian Sea) are distinctly under explored. With regular licensing rounds and annual recycling of fallow acreage there is a strong need to identify and rank prospective areas.

Frontier areas suffer from lack of imaging data and traditional seismic acquisitions can be very expensive while reprocessing of older vintage surveys in mature areas may only improve the overall picture of the sub-surface to a limited degree. As a consequence new ways of reviewing the subsurface are regarded as vital in further defining the exploration strategy of the Norwegian Sector. Additional tools and processes are needed in order to assess the sub-surface from a different perspective.
Two case studies, mature and frontier, illustrate the process of acquisition for initial screening, infill acquisition, identifying leads/prospects, ranking in the portfolio, further data acquisition strategy for application.

In the mature case a new play type for this area was identified while in the frontier area the anomaly defined supports current play models yet to be tested.
