ABSTRACT: Explore New Zealand: Independents Exploration Criteria
Darryl Thorburn , Crown Minerals, Ministry of Economic Development, Wellington, New Zealand
An IPAA survey shows that 25% of its 8,000 members want
to become international by 2003. What factors drive an explorer in deciding their
exploration destination? George Yates, past-president of the IPAA, in an address to the
1998 New Zealand Petroleum Conference, cited these factors as:
- Country risk;
- Fiscal or country terms;
- Tax systems;
- Good geology;
- Markets; and
- Infrastructure.
New Zealand satisfies all these counts as to why more explorers should join successful fellow North American independent explorers such as Swift Energy, Anschutz Corporation, EEX, Conoco, Energy Corporation of America subsidiary, (Westech Energy) and Indo-Pacific Energy and devote some of their exploration expenditure to finding petroleum in New Zealand.
