Abstract: Monterey County Water Resources Agency's use of GIS Technology in the Salinas Valley

GIS technology has been successfully implemented at the Monterey County Water Resources Agency (Agency) in several innovative ways to effectively assist the Agency deliver high quality service to the citizens of Monterey County. The innovative technological advancements the Agency has incorporated into the GIS include relational data base development and integration, data query and analysis capabilities, hydrologic modeling, advanced flood warning, professional presentation tools, digital ortho imagery, and land use classification. The development of the Agency GIS has increased the ability to efficiently analyze vast quantities of spatial and temporal data and effectively communicate complex and vital regional concerns. Examples of these capabilities include: analysis and display of ground water quantity and quality, analysis of surface water quantity, graphic representation of modeling input and output parameters, capital facilities construction benefits, rapid data retrieval for quick response to public inquires, and efficient production processes for document preparation. The real benefit of investing Agency resources in GIS technology has been demonstrated in the ability of the Agency to present complex and dynamic issues using an easy-to-understand visually graphic format.
