Abstract: Baseline Environmental Surveys of the Piltun-Astokhskoye Field, Offshore Sakhalin Island, Russia

Summary

Two oceanographic surveys were conducted in late Summer/ early Fall 1995 and early Fall 1996 to document baseline environmental conditions in the Piltun-Astokhskoye Field located offshore of Sakhalin Island, Russia. Sediment samples were collected and analyzed to determine concentrations of metals and hydrocarbons and the composition of the macro-infaunal assemblages. Currents and tidal excursion were characterized for the sampling periods. Profiling of the water column was conducted. Important benthic habitats were identified and characterized.
