Oil and gas properties have unique investment qualities. Historically, they have provided good total returns and good current yields. Moreover, directly owned oil and gas interests are negatively correlated with other asset categories. Including direct petroleum investments with an equity portfolio should reduce portfolio volatility and can help improve performance.

Understanding the financial aspects of an oil and gas interest can help persons presenting oil and gas investments to be more effective.
