Abstract: Biostratigraphy and Sequence Stratigraphy of Upper Cretaceous - Paleocene Sediments in Eastern Bulgaria

ALEXANDROVA, ANASTASSIA S.

Since 1993 a drilling program on the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf has started. So far various lithostratigraphic schemes have been proposed for correlation of onshore and offshore sediments. Sometimes lithostratigraphy itself is not sufficient for reliable correlation because of the fast lateral facies variations or transitions between different sedimentation environments.

The aim of this study will be a complex biostratigraphical and sequence stratigraphical investigation of the oil and gas perspective Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene deposits in Eastern Bulgaria. These sedimentary sequences are well exposed in this part of the country. They have been penetrated by numerous wells and core from many of them is available in the core stores of Bulgarian Committee of Geology and Mineral resources.

The biostratigraphic study will be performed on the basis of calcareous nannofossils. The final result will be a reliable zonation scheme for correlation of the rocks between the different structural zones: East Balkan, Fore Balkan and Moesian Platform.

The sequence stratigraphic research will examine lateral and vertical facies variations in representative sections in order to determine the major system tracts and sequence boundaries and to document the nature of depositional environments and tectonic evolution.
