ABSTRACT: Basement Involved Thrusts from Northwestern Maracaibo Basin

The interpretation of seismic reflection profiles from northwestern Maracaibo Basin, north of the Palmar River, suggests a late Neogene age for all the structures located within the north-northeast trends of anticlinal belts. These folded structures appear to be ramp anticlines generated from basement involved thrusts. Such detachments are intercepted by conjugate systems of low-angle decollements decoupled from the thick shaly intervals of Cretaceous and Eocene age.

The resulting configuration of these fault systems are related to a mechanic of deformation referred as "fish tail". This structural style favors the superposition of structural traps at different levels. The superposed reservoirs from La Paz, Mara, Sibucara, Mara Oeste, and Ensenada among others constitute superb examples of this style of deformation. Similar anticlinal structures are also observed to the southeast of the Basin in the Ceuta-Tomoporo area.
