ABSTRACT: Experimental Kinetic Model of the Oil and Gas Generation in the Timan-Pechora Basin

SHIMANSKY, VALENTIN C., OLEG M. PRISCHEPA, and SERGEY V. SMIRNOV, VNIGRI, Saint Petersburg, Soviet Union

The model is based on temperature stepped laboratory thermolysis of immature OM from the Domanic rocks and on the paleotemperature reconstruction of the Paleozoic section. Using our own laboratory technology it was possible to determine the set of effective activation energies for the decomposition reaction of each studied kerogen. It was estimated that by the beginning of the Late Jurassic the Domanic rocks in most of the Pechora-Colva aulocogen had yielded 70-100% of their total generation potential. In nearby regions this value had reached a maximum of 50%.

The duration of the oil generation process varied from 40 to 160 ma depending on tectonical activity of each region. The presence of big oil fields in the southern part of the Colva megaswell is linked with zones of late oil generation.
