Abstract: Belle Creek--A Unique Community Concept

Fred Hadenhorst

The Belle Creek Community in Powder River County, Montana, was established to serve the needs of the people employed by Gary Operating Company, the field operation, and by supporting contractors.

Established in 1968, it presented an opportunity to plan and construct the facilities for a small community in a remote area and to provide a pleasant and functional living environment. To a large measure the efforts were successful. The community, after 9 years, has approximately 150 permanent residents and a school enrollment of 60 pupils in grades one through eight. Employee turnover is minimal, and residents seem satisfied living in this remote area.
