Abstract: Abstract: Environmental Case Study--Henderson Mine Mill

Jim Gilliland

Environmental considerations were integrated into the earliest planning of the Henderson mine. Preceding NEPA by several years, Amax elected to invite citizen conservationists to participate in the planning process. An "Experiment in Ecology" Committee of company executives and representatives of conservationist groups subsequently was formed to provide specific environmental guidance to the development of this project. Deliberations of this committee resulted in programs of preoperational monitoring and other assessment procedures that are now commonplace requirements for new industrial development. The "Experiment in Ecology," moreover, demonstrated that industry and the public could work together in minimizing environmental impacts.
