Abstract: Application of Drilling Statistics in Basin Evaluation
P. H. Stark
Computerized drilling-statistics files provide a readily accessible low-cost tool to support exploration planning and basin evaluation. Daily initial potential rates versus success ratios, comparison footage drilled, computed drilling, and completion costs are used to rank geologic provinces for 1974-76 activity. To target favorable areas in exploration plays, historical well data are summarized to chart success, drilling costs, and daily IP yield in specific prospective formations. A case history from the Rocky Mountains illustrates this technique. Proper use of these data and techniques can result in improved selection of exploration opportunities, increased management or investor support, and better success for planned exploration programs.
