ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This work
is a product of 25 years of building a personal library on petroleum
geology. After recognizing in the early years of my career that there
was no comprehensive bibliography of AAPG’s historical publications, I
began to compile my own, largely to help guide my own collecting
habits. In the process, I was fortunate to discover many fascinating
geological accounts that I would otherwise never have encountered. The
end product, oriented toward the needs of librarians, book collectors
and book dealers, rather than technical researchers, is the type of
reference that I would have wanted to have available.
Over the
years, I have benefited from access to several libraries and book
dealers in compiling this bibliography. In particular, Anadarko’s
library and its staff were a critical component as I struggled to find
many of the more obscure items and the AAPG Foundation library and staff
performed a key role in tracking down my errors and omissions.

PERIODICALS
From the
beginning, the Bulletin, in its various forms, has been the flagship
publication outlet for the AAPG membership
The
Bulletin was published as a single issue for the first three years,
volumes 1-3 (1917-1919). The number of issues increased to three for
volume 4 (1920), and six for volumes 5-8 (1921-1924). Volume 9 (1925)
began as a bimonthly journal, but changed to monthly in mid-year, for a
total of nine issues for the year. Since then, the Bulletin has been a
monthly journal, with a member directory provided for many years as a
thirteenth issue.
Volume 1
was published as the Bulletin of the Southwestern Association of
Petroleum Geologists, changing its name to Bulletin of the American
Association of Petroleum Geologists the following year. The title was
changed to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin in
1967 (volume 51), and shortened to the AAPG Bulletin in 1974 (volume
58).
The first 4
volumes of the Bulletin were printed with a 6.25” x 9.25” page size.
This was increased to 7” x 10.25” for volumes 5-6 (1921-1922), then
trimmed to 6.75” x 9.5” for volumes 7-64 (1923-1980)., with size
modifications apparently related in part to changes in printers. A
larger format of 8.5” x 11” was adopted for volumes 65-74 (1981-1990),
and slightly reduced to the current 8” x 10.5” beginning with volume 75
(1991). In addition to the routine paperback issues of the Bulletin,
annual collections of the Bulletin bound in green cloth could be
purchased for many years.
For several
years, one of the regular monthly issues of the Bulletin was devoted to
World Energy Development. From October, 1987, until October, 1990,
World Energy Development was produced as a supplemental 13th
issue of the Bulletin, as number 10B in volumes 71-74.
All of the
technical papers from the Bulletin have been covered by the Index
volumes (through 1990) and included in the Datapages archive. Beginning
with volume 85, 2001, the Bulletin has been available to subscribers in
digital form as an option to the hardcopy journal.
The AAPG
Explorer was initiated in 1979 as a forum for member news and ephemeral
material, in part to separate this material from the peer-reviewed
technical orientation of the Bulletin.
Volumes 1
and 2 (1979-1981) were published on a bimonthly basis. The current
practice of monthly publication began with volume 3, no. 1, in
September, 1981. Originally produced in an 11.5” x 15” page size, the
format was changed to its present 11” x 15.25” in the middle of volume
2, 1980-1981.
One
96-page supplemental special issue, “Explorer: A Century”, was published
in 1999.
Explorer
contents have not been covered by either the Index volumes or Datapages.
The Geophysical Corner “columns” through 2002 are available on Search
and Discovery.
In response
to the increasing utilization of computers in petroleum exploration and
development, AAPG embarked on a new venture in 1985 with Geobyte, a
journal devoted to computer applications. Although a technical success,
it suffered from an extended industry downturn and was discontinued in
1993.
Geobyte was
published quarterly, 1985-1988; bi-monthly, 1989-1993, in seven volumes,
as an 8.5” x 11” magazine. The contents of the first five volumes were
referenced by the Index series, until the latter was discontinued.
Geobyte material is not available through Datapages.
ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENCES
Environmental Geosciences is a quarterly peer-reviewed technical journal
published by AAPG’s Division of Environmental Geosciences. It has not
been covered by either the Index volumes or Datapages.
Environmental Geosciences, which began in June 1994, continues as a
quarterly journal, published by AAPG Geoscience staff for the DEG, after
having been published by Blackwell Science, Inc.

James C. Hower, and Douglas C. Peters.
Electronically Speaking: A Presenter's Guide to Communicating Using
Powerpoint, 35-mm Slides or Poster-sized Media (2003), compiled by
Robert E. Baxter, Jr.
SEARCH AND DISCOVERY
Search and
Discovery is an online electronic journal published by AAPG/Datapages,
and available at
www.searchanddiscovery.net and through the AAPG homepage; it began
publication in 1999.
ANNUAL MEETING
ABSTRACTS
Registrants
at the AAPG Annual Conventions are provided with a program book that
includes abstracts, generally reprinted from the Bulletin, of scheduled
presentations. Program books since the early 1980s have been 8.5” x 11”
paperback volumes with 100-300 pages. Prior to that time, 6” x 9” page
sizes were prevalent. In 1992 the Annual Meeting Abstracts were no
longer published in the AAPG Bulletin, but as a separate publication.
Recent years may still be purchase from the AAPG Bookstore. The
abstracts of the 1998, 2000-2002 convention talks were also published on
CD-ROMs.
Authors of
technical papers occasionally credit the Annual Meeting program book as
the source of cited abstracts. Where the same abstract has been printed
in both the program book and the Bulletin, which is normally the case,
the citation should preferentially reference the Bulletin as a source.
This is due both to the higher status of the Bulletin as a refereed
journal, and the greater availability of the Bulletin in libraries and
in digital form.
Abstracts
from Annual Meetings are cited in both the Index volumes and Datapages,
but the citations always list the Bulletin as a source, rather than the
program book.
Abstracts
from Annual Meetings and Section Meetings from 2002 are available on
Search and Discovery.
MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORIES
For three
decades, a Membership Supplement and Annual Report was produced as a
separate, additional Bulletin issue, labeled as Part II of II for the
given Bulletin number. These began in March, 1957, as Vol. 41 no. 3,
Part II, and concluded in January, 1986, with Vol. 70 no. 1, Part II.
Since that time, updated membership directories have been printed by
AAPG, but were sold separately from the Bulletin. In common with the
Bulletin, membership directories were 6.75” x 9.5” through 1980, after
which 8.5” x 11” was adopted.
Because of
their association with the Bulletin, AAPG membership directories from
1957-1986 are commonly preserved in library settings. They are not
referenced in the Index volumes or by Datapages.

BOOK PUBLICATIONS
AAPG
began publication of unnumbered books in 1926. Many of these volumes
resulted from early AAPG symposiums. A few of the books were hardbound
reproductions of special Bulletin issues or topical compilations of
Bulletin papers. All 31 of the special book publications that were
issued prior to the start of the Memoir series in 1962, and referenced
in the Index volumes, have been included in this category. Where
Bulletin material was reprinted in a book publication, the Index volume
cited both sources. Listing is in chronological order.
With the
exception of Sander (1951), which was issued in paperback, all of the
books were bound in a dark blue cloth cover. Levorsen (1941) was also
produced in paperback for a reprint edition. The early volumes had a 6”
x 9” page size, changing to 6.75” x 9.5” in the 1950s. Beginning in the
late 1940s, several of the earlier volumes were reprinted with the page
size reduced to 5.5” x 8.5”. None of these special publications had
separate map folders, but several had pockets inside the covers to hold
folded plates. The map from Reed and Hollister (1936) was later
reprinted for sale as a separate item. Brown paper dust jackets were
available for a few printings, particularly during the 1940s and 1950s.
All volumes
but the translation of Sander (1951) were captured during the initial
production of the Datapages CD-ROM sets. Four that are reprints from
Bulletin articles were captured as part of the Bulletin conversion to
digital format.

A number of research committee reports and other items, published by
AAPG prior to 1962, were not deemed of sufficient importance to
justify coverage by the Index volumes or incorporation into the
Datapages archives. Although most of these are unknown to the general
membership today, they appear to have had a fairly wide circulation.
Several items listed in this section were treated as ephemeral
material at the time, but were later picked up and continued in
revised form by AAPG or other organizations.

AAPG, for
the convenience of librarians and authors, began numbering its book
publications in 1962 as the Memoir series. Originally designed to
encompass all of AAPG’s books, the role of the Memoirs evolved to a
position as the premier forum for AAPG publication efforts, with the
advent, in 1975, of the Studies in Geology and other numbered series.
Designation as a Memoir is intended for books that are expected to have
a broad audience and extended shelf life as a viable technical
reference.
Memoirs 9
and 15 are two volume sets. Only Memoir 42, has been reissued in more
than one edition.
The first
26 Memoirs were printed with a 6.75” x 9.5”
page size, matching that used for the Bulletin and the earlier
special publications. In 1978, starting with Memoir 27, an 8.5” x 11”
page size was adopted. All of the Memoirs have been produced with blue
cloth covers, of a lighter shade than had previously been used. Memoir
6 was optionally available in red leather, and Memoirs 1 and 14 have
been reprinted in paperback. Dust jackets originated with Memoir 31,
although dust jackets have been added to reprinted editions of a few
earlier numbers. The cover style was changed starting with Memoir 75,
which was released in hardcover, without a dustjacket.
Memoir 17
has a bound cover pocket, Memoirs 3, 43, 45, & 47 were accompanied by
separate map folders, and Memoir 72 by a CD. A 35-mm slide set from
Memoir 27 and a CD-ROM from Memoir 40 were sold separately. Memoirs 48,
51, 58, 61, 65, 66, and 68 have loose plates or errata pages tucked
inside the cover. The use of color in bound figures was used as early
as Memoirs 25 and 26, and separate loose color maps accompanied Memoirs
3 and 17.
All of
the volumes in the Memoir series have been captured digitally by
Datapages.

The Studies in Geology
series was started in 1975 to provide a forum for less expensive, more
rapid publication of technical material.
Studies
in Geology 15 and 27 are each three volume sets, with the individual
volumes having been sold separately, at least in the case of number 15.
Studies in Geology 45 was produced only as a CD-ROM set, marking the
beginning of AAPG’s direct digital publication efforts.
In
practice, the Studies in Geology series has also become the forum of
choice for many of the books that do not fit the standard requirements
for page size or binding. The original page size was 6.75” x 9.5”, and
changed to 8.5” x 11” for a majority of the Series numbers beginning in
1979. Several volumes with physical dimensions considerably larger than
a normal page size have been produced, including Studies 14, 15, 23, 26, 27, 41, 42, and 43.
Most of the Studies were printed in paperback. A few (15, 26, 27, 28, and 43) have had a metal spiral binding. Studies 39 and 46 were bound in hardcover.
Studies 22, 31, and 33 have loose folded plates inside the cover.
The Studies have been covered by the Index volumes up through 1990, and most are available in digital form through Datapages.

METHODS IN EXPLORATION
A separate series was initiated in 1981 to cover reference books
oriented toward skills and methods, rather than theoretical knowledge
or descriptive geology. In many cases, these books were adopted from
or were intended as training manuals. All of the numbers have adopted
an 8.5” x 11” page size, but the cover types and bindings have been
variable. Methods 11 overlaps into the multi-media category by
including sets of stereo-pair 35-mm slides. The Index volumes covered
the Methods series through 1990, and they are available in digital
form through Datapages.

TREATISE OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY
HANDBOOK OF PETROLEUM
GEOLOGY
AAPG embarked on a major publication effort in the mid-1980s with the
Treatise of Petroleum Geology series. As it ultimately developed, the
Treatise contains three Handbooks, eleven Atlases of field studies,
and twenty volumes of Reprints. Guided by Edward A. Beaumont and
Norman H. Foster, who edited all of the volumes except for two of the
Handbooks, the Treatise captured the state of the art across a wide
spectrum of petroleum geology topics. The Handbooks are included in
Datapages, but postdate the demise of the Index series.

TREATISE OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY
As part of
the Treatise of Petroleum Geology project, a major collection of field
studies was assembled. This series of books differed from other books
of field studies, in that the editors rigorously enforced a standardized
format, and generally limited inclusion to those fields for which
extensive, multi-disciplinary information was available. Most of the
fields are large, although not necessarily giants, and represent many
different regions and a wide range of trap and reservoir styles. In
total, 8 books of predominantly structural traps and 3 books of
stratigraphic traps were produced. These are included in Datapages
(minus the appendices that list field summary data), but postdate the
demise of the Index series.

TREATISE OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY
In
conjunction with the Treatise of Petroleum Geology project, a series of
20 reprint volumes were assembled to systematically make available the
published literature on all major aspects of petroleum geology.
Selected papers were taken from a wide range of published sources,
unlike in the earlier Reprint series (1971-1984), where papers were
limited to AAPG as a source. Volumes were available optionally in
either cloth or paperback. These publications have not been covered by

CONTINUING EDUCATION
COURSE NOTES
Over the years, there have been numerous short courses offered through
AAPG, either in conjunction with conventions or as stand-alone
operations. The mid-1970s brought a rapid increase in hiring of entry
level geologists in the petroleum industry, with a corresponding
increase in demand for educational products. The Continuing Education
Course Notes Series was started to improve the quality of the notes
presented to attendees, and allow others to obtain copies of these
notes.
Most of the Course Notes have been 8.5” x 11” and produced as
paperback. A number of them have also been produced with the
accompanying 35-mm slides and audio tapes, and these are listed
separately in the multi-media section. Most of the Course Notes have
been captured by Datapages, but were not covered by the Index Volumes.

FOREIGN REPRINT SERIES
The Foreign
Reprint Series was designed to emulate the ongoing Reprint Series, but
targeting international regions. Included papers were derived from the
Bulletin and AAPG book publications. Both numbers were produced in
paperback with a 6.75” x 9.5” page size, matching the size of the source
material. They have been covered by the Index volumes and Datapages
only as the original papers.

Index
volumes to reference book publications and the Bulletin have been
available throughout most of AAPG’s history. The initial effort, in
1937, captured the first 20 years of AAPG publication. A comprehensive
update was produced in 1947 that combined the original material with
that from the subsequent 9 years of activity. The next two decades were
each covered by Index volumes that covered only the incremental time
periods. Expanded publication activity caused the succeeding 5 Index
volumes to be limited to five-year time periods, for coverage up through
publications issued in 1990.
Morley
(1966) reported on p. 710 that a 10-year Index by Daisy Winifred Heath
was published in 1927, but fails to mention the 20-year Index of 1937.
In contrast, the Index volume of 1937 makes no mention of a 1927
publication, nor does the Index volume of 1947, which does describe the
1937 work. It is the author’s belief that only the 1937 book, which he
has personally examined, was ever produced, and that the Morley (1966)
comment was in error.
Index
volumes published in 1937, 1947, and 1957 provided a single alphabetical
listing that covered both subject and author information. 1967, 1975,
and 1979 volumes contained separate index sections for Titles, Authors,
and Keywords. 1984, 1986, and 1991 volumes returned to the single
comprehensive index approach.
All of the
Index volumes have been produced with a 6.75” x 9.5” page size in green
cloth, with the exception of the first volume, which was available in
paperback as an option.
The
hardcopy Comprehensive Index series has been discontinued, replaced by
digital indexing methods provided through Datapages. The December issue
of the AAPG Bulletin contains an index for that calendar year.
Individual volumes also have back-of-the-book indexes.

MISCELLANEOUS PUBLICATIONS
Beginning
in the early 1960s, most book publications from AAPG have been numbered
volumes of a series, such as Memoirs or Studies in Geology. A few works
continue to fall outside of the series designations, often because of a
non-technical subject matter. Despite the lack of series recognition,
some of these publications, such as the guidebooks for preparing
technical presentations, have been sold in substantial numbers. These
books have been produced in a wide variety of physical formats, have not
been referenced in the Index volumes, and only a small number have been
captured digitally by Datapages. They are listed here in chronological
order.

MAPS AND CROSS SECTIONS
GEOLOGICAL HIGHWAY MAPS
Following the lead of the Dallas Geological Society, which produced a
highway map of the state of Texas underlain by outcrop geology and
accompanied by other geological displays, AAPG began production of
comparable maps to cover the entire continental United States,
including a 2nd edition of the Texas map in 1979. These
maps continue to be sold, and several of them have been updated with
revised editions over the intervening years. These maps are not
covered by either the Index volumes or Datapages.

GEOTHERMAL MAPS OF
NORTH AMERICA
In the
1970s, AAPG and USGS collaborated on surveys of the thermal structure of
North America, culminating in subsurface temperature and geothermal
gradient maps the continent in 1976. Individual, undated, panels
depicting the geothermal gradient of state-sized areas were sold by AAPG
throughout the 1980s.
The final maps are available from Datapages as a CD-ROM set.

TECTONIC
MAPS
The Tectonic Map of the United States originated with AAPG in 1944,
and was reprinted multiple times. When a decision was made to update
it in 1961, the resultant map was a joint venture between AAPG and the
United States Geological Survey. This map was expanded to cover all of
North America in 1969 as a USGS product. AAPG returned to action the
1990s with a Tectonic Map of North America in both hardcopy and
digital form, and a reproduction of an Exxon Tectonic Map of the
World.

Section series, and numbers were retroactively attributed to the
previous Cross sections. The numbering system was discontinued after
Cross Section no.6, in 1968. Cross sections 1-6 were covered by the

The Correlation of Stratigraphic Units of North America (COSUNA)
project was designed to provide a uniform and consistent correlation
scheme and compare the stratigraphic nomenclature for the many
different basins of North America. Correlation charts for the regions
were produced over the time period 1983-1988.
COSUNA charts were not covered by the Index volumes, but are available
in digital form through Datapages as a CD-ROM set.

DATAPAGES
In
recognition of the likelihood that the future of information flow would
take place in the digital world, AAPG contracted with Masera Corporation
to scan historical AAPG publications into digital images and create
searchable databases. The initial release of CD-ROM Bulletins for
stand-alone PCs occurred in 1993, followed by a release of AAPG Special
Publications in 1996 and a network version of the Bulletin in 1997.
Datapages, Inc., a subsidiary of Masera, continued throughout the 1990s
to expand and update its selection of AAPG products and add similar
products from organizations such as SEPM and GCAGS.
AAPG purchased Datapages in 1999 and has continued to increase the
selection of material available through AAPG/Datapages, including many
items that originated from sources other than AAPG; e.g., AAPG-affiliated
societies. Only the original data sets are listed here.
