Challenges to the Social Contract for International Funding: New Demands for Public Involvement and Transparency in Oil & Gas International Developments
Abstract
Over the past decade, E&P related contamination was encountered in several international development projects. This had led to the Issuance of “EHS Guidance for Contaminated Land”. The author provides case studies entailing the application of the risk assessment and risk management protocols issued by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation to a Bahamas and a Columbian project. The author will review the corresponding Equator Principles and World Bank guidelines as they were applied to these development projects. The case studies illustrate the sensitivity of environmental issues and how companies successfully communicated to the local and international communities, NGOs and stakeholders.
