This paper presents a workflow using a Geostatistic Method in order to improve accuracy in the Velocity Model Processing. This method was applied successfully in a giant oil field located in Campos Basin, Brazil, which actually presents both, the largest Brazilian proved reserves and the greatest daily oil production.

All the previous velocity modeling methods resulted in noisy products, presenting regular quality seismic imaging. The idea of the method is to incorporate geostatistic tools in order to distribute the depth converted data in the space.

The methodology consists of the use of well markers and their correlations to the corresponding depth converted surface. The product obtained is a residual map which can be used to calibrate the original depth converted surface. Applying this procedure for each seismic reflector used in the original velocity model, it was possible to generate a smoother model, which should be more accurate and better represents the geological model. Concerning seismic data this workflow improves the imaging definition.

As a consequence, it was obtained more accuracy and a better understanding of the structural features in the area of interest, which will be fundamental to determine well trajectories.
