ABSTRACT: Accommodation Transformation of Cretaceous Qinshangkou Formation, Songliao Depression, Northeast China

Analysis of accommodation space change of QinShangKou formation, Songlian depression, indicates that change of accommodation space is both vertical and in plan-view in a given basin. This property of non-uniform change of accommodation space is called accommodation transformation in this paper. Through stratigraphic correlation, Qinshangkou formation has been divided into three units whose changes of accommodation space in the southern area of the depression are different from that in the northern area. In a given period, the change of accommodation increases in the southern area, while it is decreases in the northern area of the depression, and vice versa. This suggests the phenomenon of accommodation transformation. In addition, the existence of accommodation transformation is supported by evidence of tectonic subsidence and paleobiostratigraphic analysis. A theoretical-based approach to calculate the axis of accommodation transformation has been deduced. The identification of accommodation transformation in Songliao depression provides a challenge to traditional sequence stratigraphy and a new window to the development of earth science.
