ABSTRACT: Fast-Track Exploration And Development - Poleng Field, Indonesia

Poleng Field, a Miocene carbonate reef complex which lies offshore the Indonesian island of Madura, is an example of how the effective application of technology, such as 3-D seismic, Previous HitloggingNext Hit while drilling, horizontal drilling, and reservoir simulation, combined with committed team work can within less than one year result in increasing the Previous HitproductionNext Hit and recoverable reserves. The field which was once abandoned is now an economic venture.

Acquisition and interpretation of a large regional 3-D marine survey in 1999 provided new insights into the depositional environment, the reservoir distribution, and hydrocarbon migration. Efficient drilling techniques reduced the cost and increased the drilling rates dramatically. The delineation wells in particular are very cost effective because they are drilled out directionally from the vertical intermediate surface casing of the horizontal well prior to drilling the horizontal well. In this manner the shallow section is only drilled once for up to 4 locations. Previous HitLoggingNext Hit while drilling technology has shortened the drilling and evaluation time. The field has a large gas cap(up to 300') and a 100 ft oil column. The horizontal wells are placed within the oil column. This allows for maximum oil Previous HitproductionNext Hit without gas coning.

In summary, within less than one year of acquiring the 3-D seismic, team work, the application and integration of technology in geophysics, Previous HitloggingNext Hit, and drilling reservoir and Previous HitproductionTop engineering have achieved rapid economic success in this field.
