ABSTRACT: Exploration Plays of the North West Shelf, Australia

Jablonski, Dariusz, Ian Longley, Robert M. Somerville, Therese E. Van der Linden, and Andrew Murray , Woodside Energy Ltd, Perth, Australia

An estimated 2.1 Billion BBls of oil reserves, 2.0 Billion BBls of condensate reserves and 106 Tcf of gas reserves has been discovered within some 135 hydrocarbon discoveries on the North West Shelf of Australia. The trap types, spacial, stratigraphic and discovery history and field size distribution of these discovered resources are presented together with a synthesis of the margin's evolution and identified petroleum systems.

The combination of attractive fiscal terms, political stability, massive undeveloped gas resources, consistently good exploration success rates and significant identified but undrilled exploration potential guarantees the region will be a major petroleum province well into the new millennium.
