ABSTRACT: High-Resolution Correlation and Type Log Development the Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit in Southern Kansas

Correlation of the formations and members of the Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit, in the subsurface of Kansas, is generally difficult due to its highly complex lithofacies. Along most published cross sections in Kansas, only the top of the Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit is identified and correlated. A lack of publicly available type logs, that correctly identify Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit formations, make log correlations of the formations difficult to impossible.

The Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit is a large natural gas producer in the Hugoton Embayment of southwestern Kansas, however, it is generally unknown which formations within the Previous HitgroupNext Hit are producers. Because rocks of specific ages tend to contain more gas than others, it is critical to correctly identify and correlate those formations in the subsurface.

There is a scarcity of published, basin-wide studies of how to best explore the Hugoton Embayment for petroleum resources. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: (1) accurately correlate the 14 formations of the Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit from the subsurface of southwestern Kansas to the subsurface of southeastern Kansas and (2) develop type logs of the Council Grove Previous HitGroupNext Hit for the southern counties of Kansas using wireline logs in which the entire Council Grove Previous HitGroupTop interval can be recognized. This study can then be used to help build a better understanding of the oil and gas resources of the Hugoton Embayment.
