Abstract: Space Age Geology: The Role of Remote Sensing as a Geologic Exploration Tool

New remote sensing tools such as hyperspectral and multispectral sensors, as well as microwave (radar) and thermal systems are now available for geologic exploration purposes. Specific geological applications of data from AVIRIS (airborne visible infrared imaging spectrometer) and ASAS (advanced solid-state array spectroradiometer) airborne hyperspectral platforms will be compared with data from space-borne multispectral platforms such as Landsat Thematic Mapper and the French SPOT satellites. Spectral properties of both mineral and rock types will be discussed, along with specific geobotanical indicators of use in discriminating, identifying, and mapping commercially important geologic units. Specific geologic applications will be matched to audience interests, and active participation by the audience will be encouraged.
