Hydrocarbon Production from Low Contrast, Low Resistivity, Pennsylvanian Age Reservoirs of the Las Animas Arch region in Southeastern Colorado

WALLACE, KEVIN J., DONALD J. MCKENNA, STEVEN L. VEAL, WILLIAM F. VON DREHLE

Wireline log examples of oil and gas production from Pennsylvanian age Morrowan sandstones and Pennsylvanian age Marmaton Carbonates located within the Las Animas Arch region of Southeastern Colorado are presented. The wells presented as examples from the region of low resistivity, low contrast pay have produced in excess of 1.6 MMBO and 3.1 BCFG. Probable causes of the low resistivity in the sandstones include high porosities, disseminated heavy minerals and clay coatings of the sand grains and pore throats increasing the amount of high salinity bound water. A probable cause of low contrast resistivity in the carbonates is the presence of bound water within a chalky matrix.
