An Integrated Approach to Stratigraphic Prediction: An Example from the Offshore Gulf of Mexico
S. C. Barnette, J. H. Newell, I. J. Stewart, C. A. Yeilding
A chronostratigraphic framework for Middle Miocene to Late Pliocene age strata of the eastern sector of the deepwater Gulf of Mexico has been constructed. This framework is consistent and accurate in a predictive capacity. It is based on detailed biostratigraphy and seismic stratigraphy of both the shelf and slope areas, integrated with well log analyses. Presented here is a summary of the methodology, along with practical examples of how this approach has been used successfully to identify a cyclicity in the sediment record that has powerful applications in correlation and reservoir prediction. A summary of conclusions, pitfalls of the approach, and suggestions for future work are also presented.
