ABSTRACT: Status of the Study on Oil Generation Potential of Coals in Southeast Asia

Xianying Huang

Oil generation of coals means that the oil is generated by humic coals or humic matter divergent in coaly shales. The development of this theory advances that of the continental genesis of hydrocarbons.

In recent years, many investigators have studied the oil generation potential of coals in hydrocarbon-bearing basins of Southeast Asia. This paper emphasizes oil characteristics, the sedimentary environment of some Tertiary coals and coaly shales, and oil/source rock correlation, etc. The evidence of oil generation and expulsion of coals has shown that the formation of large oil fields by coal under favorable conditions is possible.

A great deal of coal and coaly seams that occur in the Paleogene Enping Formation (PRMB) are presumed to be important oil source rocks of the Pearl River Mouth basin. However, a quantitative analysis of oil derived from coals has not yet been made.
