Re-Sedimentation in the Upper Cretaceous Subalpine Basin

Andrzej Koszarski

The development of deposits in the Subalpine basin during Late Cretaceous time between Diois and Devoluy on the one side and the northern margin of the Argentera-Mercantour massif on the other side was dominated by redeposition of calcareous materials.

In the study area, deposits of submarine slumps and conglomerates from calcareous mass flows and calcareous fluxoturbidites frequently exist. Calcareous turbidites dominate. Most of these "pelagic limestones" seem to be the fine-grained product of turbidity currents. Sedimentation of material that originated from relatively shallow marine zones was differentiated here because of different sources of material, and from strong paleomorphologic control and tectonic action in this unhomogeneous basin.
