Abstract: Integrated Exploration

T. R. Lafehr

Exploration case histories demonstrate the necessity for performing integrated interpretations. In the North Sea, a combination of magnetic, seismic, and gravity data makes possible the calculation of a three-dimensional model of the salt and basement. In the Overthrust belt of the western United States, seismic data are expensive and difficult to interpret; in combination with gravity data, however, seismic interpretations are enhanced and extended into regions of no seismic observations. In the Gulf of Alaska, gravity and magnetic data require that there be significantly more sedimentary section than is predicted by "acoustic basement." Seismic Previous HitreflectionNext Hit, Previous HitrefractionTop, and detailed underwater gravity data acquired in the Gulf of Mexico define geologic features where any ne of the techniques would have failed if used alone. Borehole gravity measurements have recently been responsible for significant discoveries of hydrocarbons and show promise for improving seismic bright-spot evaluations.
