Abstract: Paleostructural Mapping in Bathyal Environments

Ralph Biel, Glenn H. Buck

In sedimentary basins where the Previous HittimeNext Hit of structural growth and its relation to sedimentation are critical for hydrocarbon entrapment, paleobathymetric data should be included in structural mapping programs. Paleostructure Previous HitmapsNext Hit combine isopach and paleobathymetric values which lead to significantly different structural interpretations than if conventional Previous HitstructureNext Hit Previous HitmapsNext Hit are used. The paleostructure Previous HitmapsNext Hit are used to: (1) illustrate structural growth, (2) determine migration of structural closure, (3) outline hydrocarbon paleodrainage areas, and (4) provide clues to the migration and entrapment of hydrocarbons.

Paleostructural mapping is most applicable in bathyal environments (downslope from the continental shelf) with water depths greater than 600 ft, on steep depositional slopes, and where the supply and distribution of sediments are variable.
