Abstract: Progress and Prospects in Ocean Thermal Energy

R. H. Douglass

Recent research and development work, theoretical and experimental, indicates significant progress in performance, cost, and in-service cleaning of heat exchangers for ocean thermal-energy conversion (OTEC).

System trade-offs influence selection of design points for current OTEC power system concepts. OTEC systems can be built within existing Previous HitindustrialNext Hit capacity, using current technology, which will produce energy at competitive rates. One or more prototypes will be required to establish a basis for financing. Eventual rate of deployment will depend on institutional factors.
