Abstract: Regional Geologic Mapping of North Sea by Computer
A. E. Kaplan
The regional geologic history of the North Sea was studied by making a series of computer maps. A paleogeologic map and improved structure and isopach maps were made with the computer in a complex part of the geologic section without extensive hand editing by geologists. The position of a major unconformity was located in the data file by the computer, and the formations directly below this unconformity were selected and assigned different numeric values by program logic. These ordinal-level data were gridded and contoured, and a paleogeologic map was constructed. Isopach and structure maps were improved by identifying the areas where a formation was absent and eliminating contours from these areas. Final maps were produced by the addition of shorelines, country boundary ines, company leases, and block identification on all wells.
