Abstract: Interactive Graphics in Subsurface Stratigraphic Analysis

The Geotek Exploration Support System is a collection of interactive computer programs designed to assist geologists in the description of subsurface stratigraphy. The graphics Previous HitstationNext Hit is composed of a CRT with 19-in. (482.6 mm) display area, coupled with a digitizing table and a hard-copy unit, and linked to a large computer equipped with time-sharing and virtual systems. The Previous HitstationNext Hit also has access to different types of plotters. The main program functions are the collection of data in a project file either by retrieval from a data Previous HitbaseNext Hit or by using interactive digitizing and data entry. Structural, stratigraphic, and lithofacies data are displayed in the form of Previous HitbaseTop maps, contour maps, cross sections, and trend-surface maps. Grid-to-grid operations are useful for volum computations within property boundaries, slicing techniques, convergence mapping, and the merging of well and seismic data. Using a crosshair cursor on the CRT screen to guide the program in interpreting data, a geologist can contour maps involving faults.

Other advantages of interactive computer graphics are the greater simplicity of operating programs in the conversational mode, and the ability to view and correct graphics on the CRT screen prior to large-scale plotting on electrostatic or ink-pen plotters. Exploration data are analyzed at low cost without delay, and the geologist's effectiveness is greatly enhanced.
