Abstract: Results of Previous HitBeachNext Hit Nourishment Using Dredge Spoil, Fort Massachusetts, Ship Island, Mississippi

V. J. Henry, R. T. Giles

During March 1974, approximately 382,000 cu m of spoil from maintenance dredging of Ship Island Pass was utilized in constructing an artificial Previous HitbeachNext Hit for protecting Fort Massachusetts. Erosion has predominated with the shoreline retreating an average of 1.9 m/month; the eastern half retreating 5.1 m/month and the western half advancing 1.3 m/month. Major changes are in response to northwest and northeast storms which tend to smooth the originally irregular shoreline, adjust the Previous HitbeachTop toward a profile of equilibrium, and cause nearshore shoaling.
