Tectono-stratigraphic Modeling of Reservoir Rock Units: A Case Study of South Lake Albert Basin, Albertine Rift, Western Uganda

Abstract

The study area is South Lake Albert Basin (SLAB), and the study involved construction of a three-dimension (3D) model to assess the tectonic and stratigraphic settings and orientations of the basin using 3D seismic data and suites of wireline logs. The data was interpreted using Petrel 2016.3 and Techlog 2015 software by constructing a 3D tectono-stratigraphic model that was used to determine the tectonic and stratigraphic orientation of the reservoir rock units. Correlation of different wells drilled in the area was conducted, and extraction of attributes (amplitude and variance) from seismic data was also done. Faults and horizons that were interpreted from 3D seismic volume were used as input in generating structural maps, and involved use of convergent interpolation algorithm using seismic lines with high density and velocity model that was created using structural maps (surfaces) as inputs. Horizon and fault interpretations were depth converted using the velocity model and then used in structural modeling. This velocity model was used for depth conversion and depth maps were generated. Facies modeling was also conducted to identify the different lithofacies in the reservoir rock units. The results were integrated to deduce the tectono-stratigraphic orientation of the reservoir rock units.
