Application of Elastic Parameters in the Basin Modeling of Unconventional Reservoirs

Abstract

Abstract

Exploration in the unconventional reservoir have a diverse and varied techniques and methodologies in order to obtain the sweet spot. These techniques and methodologies can vary according with the type and amount of information held in an area.

In this work is showed the application of new mathematical models that consider the dynamic-effective elastic properties from dispersion and attenuation of P and S waves, to generate rock physics templates that can simultaneously to characterize the mineralogy, organic matter and fluids of formations with characteristics of unconventional reservoirs.

Lithology of geological formations obtained from the rock physics templates is enter quantitatively into a basin modeling software, as lithological mixtures for different intervals of the geologic column.

Considering a thermal model associated with the particular tectonic evolutionary history of the geologic column and the geochemical characteristics of source rocks in the basin modelling; subsidence and burial history are calculated through geological time; and numerous properties like source rock maturity, hydrocarbon saturation, gas oil ratio (GOR), pressures, etc., are determined. With these properties are identified the places in 1D, 2D and 3D with better suitable conditions (sweet spot) for the exploration of unconventional reservoirs.
