The Eagle Ford formation in the Giddings Field of southeast Texas exhibits variable stratigraphic and lithological properties across a large geographical area of prospective hydrocarbon reservoir. Petrophysical and core analysis combined with resistivity mapping suggests that localized reservoir enhancement or “sweet spots” can be identified using a simple mathematical approach informally referred to as EHI or Eagle Ford Hydrocarbon Index. The value of this calculation is that it transcends variations in Eagle Ford stratigraphy, providing a simple tool which can be used to improve the identification of enhanced reservoir conditions associated with either primary or secondary (fractures) hydrocarbon filled porosity.
