The Deltaic Reservoirs of Reconcavo Basin: Stratigraphy and Sedimentology

The reservoirs of the Deltaic Marfim section, Lower Cretaceous of the Recôncavo Basin, are characterized by siliciclastic deltaic successions. Which exhibit high frequency cyclicity, related to episodes of deltaic progradation into a relatively large lake placed in a humid tropical climate regime.

The concepts of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy could be applied successfully to existing subsurface data (well logs and cores) of 6 reservoirs. The integration of facies analysis, well logs, and chemical stratigraphy (% TOC) data was the main tool to understand facies geometry and reservoir architecture of the studied sedimentary section.

The recognition of the key surfaces in the fourth-order sequences of the studied section, particularly sequence boundaries and maximum flooding surfaces, allowed the chronostratigraphic subdivision of the Deltaic Marfim section into four sequences of fourth-order. Both local synsedimentary tectonics and climatic conditions controlled the geometry of each sequence and its components. The proposed framework allowed a detailed description of sequence architecture, paleogeographic distribution, and stacking patterns.

Furthermore, it has provided not only the basis for identifying the main controls on these variables, but also a refinement of the studied reservoirs. At the reservoir scale, sedimentologic and stratigraphic analysis of the deltaic system revealed two main facies with good to excellent reservoir potential: mouth bar and distributary channel sandstones.
