Seismic sedimentology is a rising discipline which uses seismic data for the research of sedimentary rock and its forming process. 90°phasing conversion and stratal slicing are key techniques in seismic sedimentology. The application of seismic sedimentology has been developed in the 3D seismic data survey of the southern Songliao basin. In order to get a clearer geological understanding, the following procedures are implemented in the research. First of all, in attempts to ensure the stratigraphic meaning of seismic phase, the work of color inversion has been conducted. Secondly, with the investigation of stratal slicing and well data, the large-scale banding gravity flow channels have been discovered for the first time in Qingshankou formation of Haituozi which is located between the western slope and the central depression of the southern Songliao basin. Controlled by the growth faults, the gravity flow sand bodies are mainly distributed in the downthrow blocks. Also, the direction of these bodies is corresponding to the strike of the faults of NNW-strike. The single channel extends with a maximum distance of 33 km and the most width of them is 1100 m. These Channels cover nearly 800km². The electric log interpretation and the core observation indicate that these gravity flow sands are petroliferous. Consequently, the discovery of the gravity flow channels provides a new exploration field other than delta sand bodies in Songliao Basin and it is of considerable petroleum geology meaning.
