A palynostratigraphic, palynofacies and sedimentologic study was performed on a poorly studied clastic sequence (600 m thick) of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. It is formed by the Areniscas de Socha, Arcillas de Socha and Picacho formations. The latter unit is equivalent to the prolific oil reservoir Mirador Formation in the
Eastern Llanos Basin. Palynological data indicate a Paleocene-Eocene age for the studied interval. The organic matter and sedimentological data suggest terrestrial environments with different accommodation rates. The Areniscas de Socha Formation was accumulated by bed-load dominated fluvial environment. In contrast the Arcillas de Socha Formation was formed by mixed-load rivers with abundant swamp and crevasse splay deposits. The upward change from grey-green organic rich to mottled dominated shaley deposits in this unit indicates a change from poorly to well drained conditions in the alluvial plain. The sandstone dominated Picacho Formation evidences the return of bed-load fluvial environments with episodic fresh water lakes rich in Pediastrum. Paleocurrent data suggest an N-NW main direction of paleoflow during the entire studied interval. With this information some paleogeographic models of NW South America can be re-evaluated.
