Some Aspects of the Geology Offshore Syria

Fredrik Bockelie
Sagex, Oslo, Norway

A new 5000 km seismic survey from offshore Syria acquired by Wavefield-Inseis of Norway in 2005 has been interpreted. The data set shows the complexity of the structural framework in a compressional system where the border of the African plate meets the basin and ridge complex of the Cyprus trend. A more precise distribution of the basins (Levantine Basin, Cyprean Basin, Latakia Basin and Iskenderun Basin and the ridges, including Latakia Ridge and Lanarka Ridge within offshore Syria can be delineated. The complexity in distribution and development of Miocene reefs and salt basins offshore Syria can be demonstrated, as well as a better understanding of the general geological history and potential petroleum prospectivity of the offshore areas.
The area is being opened to offshore oil and gas exploration as a frontier area.
