3D Seismic Characterisation of an Array of Blind Normal Faults in the Levant Basin, Eastern Mediterranean

High resolution 3D seismic data from the Levant continental margin, in the eastern Mediterranean, reveals an exceptionally well imaged array of normal blind faults. This unique dataset of 30 planar faults allows the most detailed analysis of throw distribution to be conducted on entire fault planes. They can all be shown to be post-sedimentary using standard criteria and some show varying degrees of interaction with neighbouring faults and mechanical stratigraphy. This allows their effects on throw accumulation to be calibrated.

Numerous previous studies publishing displacement distribution on normal faults from outcrop or 2D seismic data predict triangular or C-type throw profiles. These provide insight into the mechanics of the initiation and growth of faults and have been used, along with displacement-length scaling, to promote several different fault growth models.

Results from this study show that blind faults do not exhibit striking triangular or C type throw profiles but predominantly display M-type or hybrid throw distribution. The simplest individual unrestricted blind faults are compared to those interacting with other faults or a major lithological boundary. Results show that the propagation and establishment of the dimensions of the faults precedes the accumulation of displacement.

A further aim of this comprehensive description of blind faults from 3D seismic data is to analyse the transition from a post-sedimentary stage to a syn-sedimentary stage on extensional faults. The understanding of nucleation, propagation and early development of growth faults is essential in accurately dating fault activity and can greatly impact reservoir characterisation through time.
