Benefiting from Emission Reductions Credits: A Canadian Eco-Efficient Community Initiative in Rural Cuba

The Eco-Efficient Communty Initiative (EECI) is a four-year project underway in Cuba that sees the transfer of Canadian renewable energy technologies into rural Cuban companies. The Initiative transfers technology like wind water pumpers to rural communities in Cuba, allowing water to be pumped from wells and eliminates the emissions with previously used diesel pumps. The water pumped from the wells is being used for potable water and agricultural irrigation.

The EECI is also providing the small wind-electric hybrid technology for an environmental monitoring station on the northern coastline of Cuba. The station is a model for sustainable energy, low impact construction and future tourism development. The hybrid system will supply 100% of the station's power needs with 86% of the energy generated from wind power and 14% generated from solar power.

The presentation will discuss the benefits of Small-Scale Clean Development Mechanism projects in the developing world and the benefits of purchasing Emissions Reductions Credits. The EECI proves that environmental technology also has a role in supporting social development projects in the poorest and most needed communities in the developing world. Suncurrent Industries will also have the experience of the construction of an emissions baseline, an assessment of project emissions and a calculation of potential emissions reductions resulting from the implementation of wind water pumpers and wind electric hyrid systems in Cuba.
